A big double-header for both Blazers teams is on the horizon this weekend, with enormous top four implications for both men’s and women’s teams.

The weekend will begin with both teams travelling to Bendigo on Saturday night to take on the Braves, while both teams will play their first home game since the first round on Sunday when they host the Mildura Heat.

Last round, the Maryborough Lady Blazers suffered a blow when they fell to their first defeat of the season to the Kyneton Lady Tigers, while the men’s team bounced back from their loss to the Melton Thoroughbreds with a 75-point drubbing over the Tigers.

For the Lady Blazers, the two games this weekend will come against fellow top four opponents, with the Braves currently sitting on top of the ladder thanks to their unbeaten record, while the Heat, albeit having played just three games, currently sit in fourth position.

They’ll be looking to get back to their best this weekend, having been held to a season-low 45 points against the Lady Tigers.

A slow start ultimately proved costly. Having scored just six points in the opening quarter, the Lady Blazers were playing catch-up for the bulk of the afternoon, and despite their best efforts, the Lady Tigers proved too strong.

The form of Claire Blower as a dominant offensive force continues, having top-scored for the Lady Blazers with 16 points, while Millie Cracknell also contributed, scoring 12.

Meantime, the men’s Blazers will likewise have a season-defining weekend, with a trip to the fifth-placed Braves followed by the chance to defend home court against the third-placed Heat.

However, they were certainly able to gain some confidence last week when they were able to trounce the Tigers by 75 points, while also having the opportunity to give fringe players some good minutes on the court.

It meant that six Blazers were able to finish with double figures, including Lachlan Drummond, who top-scored with 22 points, while Matt Johnston (21 points), Rhys Brown (18), Bailey Jacobs (14), Kya Lanfranchi (13) and Brady Neill (11) likewise played big contributions to the win.
