Bergen shoots 53 as Navarre defeats Harcourt
An exciting offensive flourish headlined another excellent Navarre display on Saturday, improving to a 4-1 record at Harcourt’s expense with a 78-24 win.
Zanaiya Bergen further cemented herself as one of the most dominant shooters in the MCDFNL, finishing with 53 goals versus a tricky Lions unit to lead another phenomenal performance from the revamped Grasshoppers attack.
While the hosts entered the match with one defensive change, seeing 18 and under defender Reanna Stewart deputise for Grace Long, Harcourt entered Saturday’s contest without key shooter Jarrenhy Webb.
Lauren Peeler was called up from B grade to provide the Lions with another shooting option while Ursula van Dyk started at goal attack alongside Jordan Bagley.
Despite the absence of Webb, the Harcourt managed some stable scoring runs against the vaunted Grasshoppers’ defence during the first quarter.
However, the Lions were unable to keep up with the fast-starting Navarre. With Sidney Dyer and Brooke Currie working at a high tempo in the midcourt, Bergen and Lockhart opened their accounts with a combined 22 goals, allowing the hosts to enter quarter time with a 14-goal buffer.
That margin only continued to grow when play resumed for the second quarter, as Dyer and Currie created countless opportunities for Bergen and Lockhart to extend the lead.
Bergen’s offensive rebounding was also a factor, turning several misses into second-chance goals.
The Lions showed heart fighting against the tide, continuing their early offensive consistency, but the Grasshoppers were in complete control at half time, leading by 28 goals.
Navarre’s elite defence began to shine following the interval, with Currie’s shift to wing defence helping Jess Parry and Jade Allen constrict Harcourt to three goals in the third quarter.
With Lockhart and Bergen scoring 20 during the term, Navarre ballooned the scoreline to 63-18 by three-quarter time.
Credit to the Lions, their defensive pressure was at its peak during the closing stages, with Morgan Howorth, Carly Chaplin and Laura Suckling playing extremely well throughout the fourth quarter.
Their teenage counterpart, Stewart, made an impactful cameo for Navarre as a goal keeper late, helping the Grasshoppers complete a authoritative victory.
Alongside Bergen’s game-high 53 goals, Lockhart was typically efficient for the hosts, ending with 25 makes.
As for Harcourt, Bagley continued her extremely consistent start to the season with a team-best 19 goals while van Dyk, Peeler and Ella Rule combined to add five goals.
