A warning to all Maryborough-based cricket clubs, the Bulls are stampeding through town.

Fresh off a remarkable fightback versus Maryborough last round, Beaufort has earned an astounding victory by knocking off Colts Phelans by 14 runs.

It’s the first time Beaufort has knocked off the reigning premiers since October 22, 2023, doing so by defending the lowest winning score so far this season.

The pace attack of Jayden Scotland and Theo Trevelyan-Clark was instrumental in the triumph, each taking three crucial breakthroughs to bowl the Colts out for 111 after a late Nick Henderson scare.

The hosts resumed their innings at Hedges Oval in a pickle at 5/52, set remained confident they would score the 74 runs required to complete the run chase with Asim Akhtar and Liam Stubbings at the crease.

Two early fours from Stubbings bolstered the Colts’ belief even further, placing Beaufort in a pickle of whether they need to alter their plans on the fly.

However, with a game like cricket, momentum can change on a dime, and Beaufort’s quicks swung the pendulum into their favour in an instant.

It started with Scotland scoring the wicket the Bulls were desperate to procure, getting Akhtar to hit a ball directly to Lachlan Oddie.

Shortly after the Colts leading run-scorer was gone for 19, Trevelyan-Clark delivered another decisive blow, goring Stubbings for 13 thanks to a catch from Nick Stabbins.

After a promising start to the day’s play, the Colts found them-selves back in the pit of despair at 7/67, but had an experienced rescuer who could still drag them out of their predicament.

Following his crucial knocks in victories versus Maryborough and Carisbrook, Luke Tatchell was given his most challenging mission this season, with him and Jack Gallimore still requiring 59 runs.

With an abundance of overs in hand, the pair were extremely patient, with Tatchell doing all the scoring while Gallimore protected his wicket.

The Bulls continued to mount the pressure on Tatchell and Gallimore, especially when Oddie was given the ball and routinely provided no avenue for scoring.

As the contest hit a critical juncture, it was Beaufort’s star all-rounders who navigated the game’s direction.

After Oddie bowled Gallimore for a duck, Trevelyan-Clark became the first bowler to take Tatchell’s wicket this season, with the wicketkeeper gone for 11 thanks to a Lyle Aichroth catch.

Tatchell’s removal signified the end was nigh for the Colts, with their final partnership of Hunter Kurzke and Henderson still needing 45 runs with one wicket in hand.

However, in the iconic words of NBA coaching legend Rudy Tomjanovich, “don’t ever under-estimate the heart of a champion”, and an unlikely source provided the ventilator to the reigning premiers.

Despite not facing a single delivery this season and scoring just 29 runs in the last two seasons, Henderson was seeing deliveries like a beach ball, rapidly catching ground on the Colts’ target with some exceptional shots.

Kurzke was also playing his role well, limiting his danger while keeping the hot hand of Henderson rolling.

As Henderson’s heroics made the Bulls begin to sweat, Brandon Walsh sealed the Colts’ fate by bowling Henderson for 27 to secure Beaufort’s victory.

Henderson should be proud of his performance in a seemingly unsalvageable situation with the bat, hitting his highest A grade score since his game-winning 41 against MKM on October 26, 2013.

Scotland and Trevelyan-Clark ended with figures of 3/30 and 3/33 respectively, while Oddie was just as vital, taking 1/1 with a whopping eight of his nine overs ending in maidens.
