Daisy Hill’s Beau Treloar can now officially be called a race winner in the world of thoroughbred racing, after saluting aboard Happy Family in the first race at Horsham on Sunday.

Happy Family may have been a fourth-rated favourite with the bookies, but, under Treloar’s watch, ran a perfect race, sitting behind hot favourite Miami Vice in third from the jump, before running on in the straight to overhaul the best-backed hope to take the win.

According to Treloar, it was exactly how he felt the race would play out, and was relieved to secure his first win.

“Post-race, it was a big relief,” he said.

“The horse wasn’t the best-backed on the day, but I knew if Miami Vice raced like it had been, it would tire late and I felt I would round it up.

“It was a big weight off the shoulders and break my maiden, as well as the horse’s maiden. Now I’m looking for the next one.

“I gave Pat Kearney, the trainer, a call before the race, talking through the horses and he said to take the race in my own hands, as it doesn’t normally play out the way you want it to, so I did that, got into a nice position, and came away with the win.

“Pat’s good, nice and calm and he doesn’t put too much pressure on you.”

The relationship between Treloar and Kearney is a special one, with Treloar working under Kearney’s watch for the last two years, doing a lot of track work for his horses to help prepare them for big races.

After Treloar was selected as one of Racing Victoria’s apprentice jockeys last year, Kearney knew he could trust Treloar to get the job done.

“They do a good job at Racing Victoria getting us ready and prepared for races, and I was well-prepared for my race, I just wanted to find that winner and after doing track work for Pat over the last couple of years, he gave me a couple of nice horses and I rode a winner for him,” he said.

There was a nice little piece of family history for Treloar as well, having used a saddle from his uncle, Wayne, to salute.

“The saddle I used in the race is actually my uncle Wayne’s saddle. It’s a little piece of history, he hooked me up with a nice little saddle and I was able to ride my first winner in it,” he said.

With an excellent win under his belt, Treloar says this win could open doors to more trainers giving him an opportunity to ride their horses in the future.

“It gives other trainers a look into what I can do and what I can achieve,” he said.

“That’s already started and I can start riding for different trainers. It’s definitely opened doors and it’s kicking off my career.”

His schedule around Christmas and the New Year is quite packed, and he’s looking forward to the challenge.

“I have rides at Seymour and Yarra Valley coming up, then a couple of days off for Christmas, but I’m riding Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, so I have a few rides lined up, which is really good,” he said.
