The Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) has once again joined with the Maryborough Community House (MCH) to bring the Y Ballarat’s Bags of Joy campaign to the local community.
The donation campaign has been running for three years in Maryborough, and this year 35 bags were filled with gifts such as sporting equipment, books, board games and more, which will be given out to kids who may otherwise miss out this Christmas.
MEC seven-12 wellbeing coordinator and founder of Bags of Joy, Jessy Malham, said the initiative was even shown outside of the school and the non-profit organisation.
“We put flyers out around the community and on our social media and it is great to see the whole community get involved,” she said.
“Sometimes kids, especially older ones, get forgotten about during this time of year — to support them and to see these young kids continue to be a part of it is wonderful.”
Ms Malham, with the help of the Y Ballarat, a non-profit organisation that supports and inspires young people, donated over 200 bags this year to teenage kids in the Ballarat region.
MCH coordinator Jeannie Clark said the initiative shows the best parts of the holiday season.
“We will be giving these out to kids in our community alongside our own Christmas hampers,” she said.
“It has been a wonderful partnership over the past three years and I look forward to it continuing.”
