Avoca Friends of the Pool committee member Donna Hawker, treasurer Andy Mills and president Belinda Costigan are ready to Slide into Summer tomorrow.

Since its formation in January 2014, the community group has hosted an opening event commemorating the return of pool season.

With pools in the Pyrenees Shire reopening last week, swimmers can dive back into the fun with large inflatables, fairy floss and slushie machines set to excite residents tomorrow afternoon.

According to Avoca Friends of the Pool president Belinda Costigan, the event aims to bring affordable and interactive family fun to the community.

“We are more community based, we are trying to bring the community together so to have them in such a grand setting with room to hold events is really good,” she said.

“We want to bring it back to basics, you don’t have to spend a fortune for a family to have a good time.

“We have been trying to promote a family season and to get the kids who suffered during COVID to get their water skills back up and running.”

Avoca Friends of the Pool hosts numerous events throughout the season including discos, karaoke and movie nights.

Ms Costigan said she expects this pool season to be no different, with a wave-packed schedule catered to community interests.

“We did a survey asking people what they want because it’s not our pool, it’s their pool and we have come up with a really good batch of events surrounding that,” she said.

“They want the opening and closing events, discos, competitions with lifeguards versus Friends of the Pool — they enjoyed the interaction not just with us, but also with the lifeguards and it makes them feel a part of the community.

“We have noticed in the last few seasons older kids have been hovering away, last year they were coming back so we did have a lot of interaction from them wanting more activities in the pool.

“We have been in discussions with Belgravia the pool managers to try and have something going every weekend like volleyball, cricket and colouring competitions.”

The Slide into Summer event is tomorrow at the Avoca Swimming Pool from 3 to 6 pm. Normal pool entry fees apply.
