Avoca has tasted victory for the second time this season when they defeated the Maryborough Giants at Hedges Oval on Saturday by 10 points.

The Bulldogs won the game with a dominant first half. They won the contest in the middle of the ground and shared the ball around with precision passing, and it was Sean Moyle who played a blinder for the Bulldogs, and kicked the opening goal of the game just four minutes into the first term.

It was one of three goals that Moyle scored as he covered the ground from the back half to the forward half.

Byron Wynd was another who was everywhere and he kicked Avoca’s second goal from a set shot after marking on the lead.

The Giants’ coach Damian Cupido outpointed Scott Cawthan in a marking duel ten minutes into the game and slotted the Giants first goal, and the first of his five goals that the big forward kicked for the game, but he was also astray on many occasions and could easily have finished with a bag of 10.

Avoca captain Darcy Carey drifted forward and kicked two goals in two minutes for the Bulldogs to set up a 15-point lead at quarter time.

It was all Avoca in the second term as they kicked four goals to four behinds to boost the lead out to 36 points at half time, and they managed to maintain the status quo in the third quarter where the lead was once again 36 points going into the final term.

This is where the game took a turn, and the Giants found their run out of the centre from Lachlan Bates and Cody Wright, and Cupido showed that you should never take him for granted as he slotted two goals, and Bates slotted an amazing goal on the run out of the centre bounce late in the game to get within 10 points.

But the final siren sounded soon after and the Bulldogs were victors in their first ever game against the Maryborough Giants.

Better players for Avoca were Moyle, Wynd, Bryce Howell, Eric Wilkinson and Riley Hamilton, with Moyle and Carey kicking three goals apiece.

The Giants named Bates, Wright, Matt Walker and Blake Dawson in the best players as were Seth Hoskin and Declan Wagstaff with Cupido kicking five goals.
