An undermanned Avoca defeated Campbells Creek by 20 points at Avoca on Saturday to win their third game of the season and keep Campbells Creek winless at the bottom of the ladder.
Despite only winning by 20 points, Avoca was the superior team on the day with 10 more scoring shots on goal and but for inaccuracy should have won by a bigger margin.
Campbells Creek did play some good football early but the Avoca defence, led by Matt Newton, stood up to all of their attacking moves to hold them scoreless in the first term while Avoca scored goals through Cameron Antonio, Zack Lubeek and a 50-metre bomb from Sean Moyle.
Lubeek kicked the first two goals of the second term to help the Bulldogs post a 33-point lead at the eight-minute mark, but Campbells Creek responded with the next three goals to Justin Allison, Matthew Manning, in his first game for the season, and Dylan Stevens. Lubeek then kicked his third goal for the quarter, which was answered by Sean Moss and Avoca led at half time by 24 points.
The second half was an even game, but to Creek’s credit they did win the final term as the Bulldogs could only score three behinds, while Creek goaled through Ben Carson and Stevens.
Despite Creek finishing strongly, Avoca had the game under control and were led by Byron Wynd who ran and broke the lines of Creek all day.
Riley Hamilton also played an outstanding game for Avoca, as did Scott Cawthan in the ruck, others to play well were Antonio, Tyson Gray, Bryce Howell and Newton, while Lubeek was the key goal kicker with six of the eight Bulldogs goals.
Creek was well served by Nick O’Brien, Stevens, Hadley Bassett, Kyle Gellatly, Mitch Stevens and John Vakatau, and Dylan was the only multiple goal scorer with two goals.
