Avoca residents will no longer have to go out of town to recycle their cans and bottles for a 10 cent refund — they can finally take advantage of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) closer to home.

A new reverse vending machine refund point has been installed at Steve Holland Transport in Avoca, by TOMRA Cleanaway.

The site is now the second in the Pyrenees region and will allow residents to locally exchange eligible drink bottles, cartons, and cans for 10 cents per item.

“I’m delighted to see the brand-new refund point in Avoca now officially open,” Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said.

“CDS improves recycling in our communities, but also puts money back in the pockets of local families.

“I know how excited Avoca locals were to get a CDS refund point close to home. Now they won’t have to travel to Beaufort, St Arnaud, or Maryborough to recycle their bottles, cartons, and cans.”

Through the scheme, people will be able to receive their money in any of the following four ways:

  • Vouchers — these can be used towards your purchase at participating local stores or supermarkets.

  • Cash — you can receive a refund in cash after your drink containers are counted at the counter.

  • Donate — funds can be donated to registered charities or organisation.

  • Electronic payment — all funds will go directly into your bank, however the CDS Vic app is required to process the refund.

  • CDS Vic also gives charities, community groups, schools, and sporting groups new ways to fundraise by registering as a Donation Partner.

In the Pyrenees, groups and organisations are already fundraising with CDS Vic, including Pyrenees Animal Rescue — Saving and Rehoming Animals.

Avoca’s new refund point is located on 26 Monier Street, Steve Holland Transport and will be open from 7 am to 9 pm, seven days a week.
