A dominant second half allowed Avoca to power away from Trentham, recording a 28-goal victory to remain unbeaten and on top of the ladder.
The Bulldogs had to fight off all of Trentham’s advances in the first half, and it was a fierce start to the game, with the Bulldogs scoring 16 goals to the Saints’ 11 to lead by five goals at the first change. Maddy Egan scored 13 goals, while Gina Beavis added three for the Dogs, while for the Saints, Tarnee Hammond scored 10 and Zahlia Turton one.
The second quarter was very much goal-for-goal in what was an entertaining affair, with the Bulldogs scoring 13 goals and the Saints 12. That allowed the Bulldogs to maintain a 29-23 lead at the main break, with Egan adding another 11 goals for the Bulldogs, and Beavis two, while for the Saints, Hammond scored 11 goals, and Stephanie Hammond scored one.
But it was the Bulldogs which cleared away in the third term, scoring 19 goals to 10 to lead 48-33 at the final change. Egan continued her dominant form in front of goal, scoring 15 goals, with Beavis adding four, while for the Saints, Tarnee scored on four occasions, Turton added three and Jacqui Bell also scored three goals.
The final quarter saw the Bulldogs shift up another gear as they finished the match at a brutal pace, adding 18 more goals to just five from the Saints as they dominated through the midcourt, with Egan doing the rest. She scored 14 goals in the last quarter to finish with 53 for the day, while Beavis added four. For the Saints, Tarnee scored three times, while Turton added two.
The Bulldogs now face a fascinating matchup in a battle of two unbeaten teams when they travel to Carisbrook, while Trentham will host Talbot as they look to get back on track.
