The Pyrenees Shire’s Australia Day celebrations will take place at the Avoca Recreation Reserve next Friday, with residents encouraged to attend.

Australia Day is a chance to reflect, respect and celebrate together as a community.

The day will include a ceremony to welcome new citizens, as well as acknowledging the contributions of residents with the annual Australia Day Awards.

Australia Day ambassador Professor Paul Komesaroff AM will give the annual Australia Day address.

Professor Komesaroff is a physician, medical researcher and philosopher at Monash University in Melbourne, where he is also a professor of medicine.

Pyrenees Shire mayor Robert Vance said Australia Day is an opportunity to look back at the past year and come together to celebrate what we have as a nation and a community.

“The start of the year is always a good time to stop and reflect on the last year. Australia Day is a day where we can reflect on the achievements of last year and look to the year ahead,” he said.

Council presents three awards on Australia Day — Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year.

“Once again we’ve had many amazing nominations for our Australia Day awards,” Cr Vance said.

“It’s a privilege to be part of an event that recognises incredible efforts of our residents and community groups. This kind of community spirit is what makes the Pyrenees such a great place to live.”

The event will start with morning tea at 10 am. The official celebrations, including the Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony, begin at 11 am, followed by a barbecue lunch.

Free activities and displays for the whole family include Jamie and Kim’s mobile zoo, airbrush tattooing, Walk the Walls Parkour, face painting and Furals wood workshop.

This event is proudly hosted by the Avoca CWA and Pyrenees Shire Council, with support from the National Australia Day Council.
