Asteria Services staff and clients came together to mark National Reconciliation Week yesterday.

Participants, staff and members of the community gathered at the organisation’s Christian Street facility to raise the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags following a speech by board president Michael Ritchie.

National Reconciliation Week runs from May 27 to June 3 with the aim of strengthening relationships and celebrating Indigenous culture.

May 27 commemorates the successful 1967 referendum which saw more than 90 percent of Australians vote to change the constitution so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted as part of the population, while June 3 marks the date of the High Court’s Mabo decision.

Asteria’s Michelle Rafferty said it was important to commemorate National Reconciliation Week locally.

“It’s important to recognise Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders,” she said.

“It’s really good for the participants to learn about their culture.

“We sent out invitations to community members, businesses and groups and it was great that they could attend and be involved.

“It’s always good to be able to celebrate reconciliation week with the community like this.”
