Art gallery and Indigenous garden finalist in state awards

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery and its new garden, garingilang gatjin wii, have been named finalists for a state-level award, building on the redeveloped gallery’s recent successes.

The gallery and Indigenous Interpretive Garden are one of 15 finalists in the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards for architecture.

It is the latest award the gallery and garden are in the running for, after being highly commended at the 2023 Victorian Museums and Galleries Awards, showcased at the 2023 Venice Biennale, likened to the Olympics of the art world and gallery architects Nervegna Reed Architecture earning a bronze medal for the Asia Oceania region at the 2A Continental Architectural Awards.

The redeveloped gallery reveals intertwining and shared stories, the gallery’s submission to the design awards reveals.

“The project sensitively reveals the original history of the Fire Station through a filter of Country by recognising and weaving the Dja Dja Wurrung culture and Indigenous Interpretive Garden within,” the submission reads.

“The project reveals building elements while connecting visitors to the Indigenous Interpretive Garden; where a sharing Country, and cultural stories reflecting natural elements.”

Winners of the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards are expected to be announced today.
