Reflections on the meaning of sacrifice and acknowledgement of the lesser-known heroes of WWI were central themes at Anzac Day commemorative events held in the townships of Majorca and Carisbrook on Tuesday.

Guest speaker and Goldfields FM 99.1 host Bruce Kaye reflected on the tragedy of the Gallipoli campaign, and how the deaths of the Australian soldiers helped contribute to the freedom the nation enjoys today.

He also acknowledged the unsung home heroes who supported the war effort through agricultural and manufacturing work in Australia, and told the stories of a horse and a dog who each received the Blue Cross for valour and their service during WWI.

Community representatives laid wreaths at the base of the memorials, and students from Carisbrook Primary School read speeches on what Anzac Day meant to them, with two including personal recollections relating to great grandfathers who had served in WWII.

Programs for each event included hymns, the reading of the names of the fallen and The Ode, the sounding of The Last Post, and the raising of the flag.

Held in Victoria Park Gardens, the Majorca ceremony attracted a crowd of around 70 people, while the Carisbrook service was held at the cenotaph near the corner of Pyrenees Highway and Camp Street, with a temporary road closure allowing approximately 150 people to safely attend.
