DIVISION ONE

Highland Tartan are the new ladder-leaders of division one following a thrilling 59-55 victory over Dunolly Blue.

The result swings the outlook of the top four, now separated by just 11 points between Tartan on top and Talbot in fourth.

All three rinks on offer were very close, with Peter Waters giving Dunolly Blue a rink with a 17-13 win over Garry Coburn, but Tartan took the other two rinks, with Michael Fryar taking a 25-20 win over Alan Weir and Greg Shay winning 21-18 over Tony Galofaro.

Maryborough Golf Blue were able to also reduce the gap as a result, with a 70-49 win over Avoca Red to sit in third position.

A dominant 33-9 win by Anthony Chambers over Ian Proctor was the ticket for Golf, who also had a 22-14 win for Kevin Prime over Matthew Higgins. Noel Parratt ensured Avoca Red wouldn’t go home empty-handed, taking two points thanks to a 26-15 win over Gerry Carmody.

Similarly, Talbot Gold have moved into a good position, defeating Highland White 70-51 to clear away in fourth spot.

Matt Vernon took a 25-18 win over Bert Spencer, while Chris Crossley’s 25-9 win over Roy Crawley was also pivotal. Robert Bursill took two points for Highland White with a 24-20 win over Peter McLaughlan, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the gap.

DIVISION TWO

While ladder-leaders Newstead Blue enjoyed their bye, Maryborough Golf joined them on equal footing on 78 points with a 77-32 win over Dunolly Green.

Golf took all three rinks in the process, with Kort Gay taking a 27-17 win over Jim Haigh, while Ross Andrews took a 28-8 win over Wayne Stephens. Harold Patullo finished things off with a 22-7 win over Sandra Chaplin.

Carisbrook have leapfrogged Maldon into third position courtesy of a perfect weekend where they defeated Highland 74-39.

Ron Baker took a 21-14 win over Frank Mifsud, while Malcolm Milne had the biggest win with a 31-13 win over Adrian Masterman-Smith. Ross Gregory’s 22-12 win over Tilleke Wadeson ensured it was a big day for Carisbrook.

Maldon are still very much in the frame, but were made to work for their 63-55 win over Newstead White.

Wesley Honeyman took a 29-15 win over Jennifer McHugh, but Rod Jackson ensured Newstead White would take a rink with a 25-7 win over Geoff Cobden. Peter Sedgwick ensured Maldon would stay in the top four with a 27-15 win over Mark Leckey.

Talbot have kept a watching brief on the top four with a 77-49 win over Avoca.

Gordon Marr gave Avoca a rink with an 18-15 win over Laurie Vernon, but it was all Talbot on the other two rinks, with Ray Prentice defeating Loralee Field 30-18 and Barb Crossley defeating Ann Loosmore 32-13.

Dunolly Gold are also still keeping in touch, taking a 78-39 win over Bridgewater.

Dunolly Gold almost managed to take all three rinks, but James Smith and Christopher Brooshooft could not be separated on 17 shots apiece. Fabio Delconte’s 27-12 win over Ron Brown and Ian McKenzie’s 34-10 win over Ian Clutton ensured they would take a comfortable win, however.

ROUND SIX

With the top four as close as ever in division one, it appears round six was the perfect time to bring the four teams together as they all meet, with any one of the top four able to sit on top after this weekend.

Dunolly Blue will be hoping to avoid a second consecutive loss when they travel to Talbot Gold, who themselves will be hoping to put more breathing space on their spot inside the top four.

Newly-appointed leaders Highland Tartan will look to make the most of their new standing, travelling to Maryborough Golf Blue, who will be looking to recapture their spot back in the top two.

Meantime, Highland White and Avoca Red will be looking to keep up their chase of a spot in the finals, with their clash at the Highland Society pivotal to their chances of staying in contention.

In division two, the match of the round looks set to be Newstead Blue’s clash with Maldon, with first taking on fourth at Newstead Bowls Club.

Maryborough Golf could be in line to take advantage of any slip-up Newstead Blue have, and will travel to Bridgewater to look for another good result.

Carisbrook will look to keep on track as they host Dunolly Gold at Carisbrook.

Highland will need to roll the dice if they are to catch up to the top four, and will need a positive result at Talbot to remain in finals calcula-tions.

Eighth and tenth will do battle when Avoca travels to Newstead White.

Dunolly Green will have the bye, and takes 16 premiership points, which could move them as high as seventh depending on results around the league.
