Season eight of the AFL Women’s competition kicked off last Friday night, with the Maryborough district’s elite players all in the thick of it on and off the field.

Collingwood’s Lauren Butler was unable to take part in the Magpies’ game against reigning premiers Melbourne due to a foot injury, and the Magpies felt the full brunt of missing her, as well as fellow star defender Ruby Schleicher, as the Demons put the foot down to kick eight goals to zero in the second half to record a 42-point victory.

Paige Scott played her part in Essendon’s 19-point victory over Hawthorn — their second consecutive opening round victory against their traditional rivals.

She had 10 touches and laid five tackles, as well as a goal assist, as the Bombers started off their season handsomely.

Former Trentham junior Jenna Bruton was also missing on the weekend as she has been sidelined for three weeks with a calf issue, however, it was not enough to stop North Melbourne from taking victory in their first game of the season as they got the better of St Kilda by 40 points.

Collingwood will be hoping Butler makes her return when the Magpies host Fremantle at Victoria Park on Sunday, while Scott and her Bombers will take on St Kilda in their first game at Windy Hill, also on Sunday. Bruton’s Kangaroos will host Carlton at Arden Street on Sunday.
