Residents in the Central Goldfields and Pyrenees shires and surrounding areas must be prepared for more flash flooding likely to occur due to more rainfall predicted for Thursday and Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the worst of the rainfall this week will happen across northern Victoria on Thursday but will start sweeping across the state from today, with flash flooding and damaging winds possible.

“Across the state over these coming days all of our river systems on and north of the dividing range are at risk so communities in and around the Wimmera River, Avoca River, Loddon River, Campaspe River... are at risk,” VICSES Chief Officer Tim Wiebusch told mediaon Tuesday.

“We’ll also see minor flooding occurring in other parts of the states which means local bikepaths, walking paths, and recreational areas are likely to be inundated over the coming days.”

The Bureau of Meteorologypredicts60 to 80mm ofrainfall in the Maryborough area tomorrow,Thursday, and 60-100 mm in Avoca.

Victorians are encouraged to make their own preparations for potential emergencies by having enough supplies on hand to last for up to 72 hours and to set up a support network with friends, family, neighbours andlocal council.

To prepare for flooding, SES recommends:

• Create an emergency plan, including packing an emergency kit with items like torches, water, mobile phone, medication, waterproof clothing, pet essentials, and basic food staples.
• Prepare sandbags — sandbags will not stop water completely, but can reduce the amount of water entering your home. During low-level flooding, sandbags placed in the right locations around your home can reduce the impact of flooding.

“Our emergency services are ready — we need Victorians to be ready too. Create an emergency plan, keep updated with the latest advice and make sure you’ve got a support network to keep safe,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
