While cricket in its entirety hasn’t completely returned for A reserve grade, a round of cricket was still played on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Beaufort, Talbot, Natte Yallock and Laanecoorie Dunolly, their games were washed out on the weekend, meaning that they will have to wait one more week for their season to officially start.
The big result in A reserve saw Clunes knock off the reigning champions in Carisbrook by 57 runs at Clunes Primary School.
Nine batsmen made double figures for Clunes, led by Fred Penhall with 37, while Thomas Hardy added 35 and Dylan Davies added 29. All in all, it was enough to see Clunes make 9/196 off their 40 overs.
Nick Broad was Carisbrook’s best with the ball, taking 3/41 off his eight overs, while Leigh Koop and Cole Harris took two wickets each.
In response, Carisbrook were never able to get their innings going, losing their first three wickets for 22 runs, before finishing all out on 139 from 36 overs.
Jarryd Coghlan top scored with 24, while Broad added 21 in a solid all-around match. Paul Coon was chief destroyer for Clunes, taking 3/24 off six overs, while Davies and Bradley Stevenson took two wickets apiece.
Colts Phelans added to their A grade success by winning their opening A reserve game against Avoca by 17 runs.
A 30 run partnership for the first wicket helped set Colts on their way, with some consistent scoring from Sebastian Borg (24), Dayne Baker (35) and Daniel McGregor (27) helped them set Avoca 141 runs for victory.
Cameron Holland led the way in the bowling department for Avoca, taking 2/26 off eight overs.
In response, it looked as though Avoca would be up to the task, with Nicholas Lester top scoring for the weekend with 51 not out. But he was unable to have enough support to help chase down the total, with six teammates scoring single figures, which resulted in the Bulldogs falling just 17 runs short of their target.
McGregor was chief destroyer for Colts, taking a spectacular 3/11, including three maidens, in his eight overs, while Riley Govan took 3/25 off seven overs.
Mr Mobility Oval hosted the thriller of the round, as MKM fell four runs short against Maryborough.
Bradey Tranter effectively carried the Owls’ innings of 76, scoring 41, while Jackson Goodwin was the only other player to score in double figures with 14.
Josh O’Connor took quick wickets towards the tail for Maryborough, and finished on 4/21, while Lewis Patten took 2/6 off eight overs, including six maidens.
In response, the Owls made a great start when they left MKM 6/35, with the work of Tranter and Mick Malik crucial, taking 3/12 and 3/14 respectively. MKM looked to fight back, but fell just four runs short when Craig Jennings bowled David Coomber for the final wicket.
Patten top scored with 26 for MKM, while O’Connor added 11 runs.
In the Red House Bakery 16 and under competition, Maryborough and Colts Phelans got their game underway at Jubilee Oval, with Maryborough looking to defend a total of 95 on the second day’s play tomorrow morning.
