A make-shift Maryborough’s winning run in the A reserve competition continued against a fired-up South Bendigo on Saturday as they maintained a good hold on fourth position.

With star defender Ella Patten missing due to Bendigo Football Netball League interleague commitments, Maryborough fielded a makeshift defensive unit, with Chloe Egan filling in, while Amanda Durbridge moved back in the second half.

It was a tight start, with the Magpies holding the lead at the end of the first quarter by scoring 14 goals to 12. Jordan MacIlwain scored eight goals for the Magpies, and Megan Kelly added six.

There was no let up throughout the second quarter as Maryborough held on to the lead as they scored 11 goals to South’s 12, to lead by a goal at the main break.

Maryborough continued to score consistently in the third term, and scored 12 goals, with Kelly adding five and MacIlwain seven, as they held on to a narrow lead at the last change.

A slight shift in the goal circle saw MacIlwain move to goal shooter and Kelly to goal attack, and the move paid dividends as they scored 13 goals to hang on by a solitary goal. MacIlwain scored 10 goals, while Kelly added three.

The result means they stay in fourth, but have a game in hand on Kangaroo Flat, who are ahead on percentage only.

Meantime, it was a tougher assignment for the B grade and B reserve teams, with B grade going down 66-28 and B reserve losing 71-25.

There was better news for the 17 and under girls, who have set up a mouthwatering clash with ladder-leader Golden Square in two weeks time as they defeated South Bendigo 41-26 to sit comfortably in third after five games.
