The first round of the Maryborough District Cricket Association A reserve competition was played last Saturday.
Talbot were able to dispatch Carisbrook with ease, taking just 17 overs to chase down a target of 98.
Carisbrook won the toss and elected to bat, and early indications suggested it was the right call when Richard Ough and Elliot Cullinan put on 37 for the first wicket.
However, when Ough was bowled, it triggered a collapse, with the Brookers losing 6/28.
Save for some late hitting from Alan Lendon, Carisbrook weren’t able to recover, with the Brookers all out for 97 in 30.2 overs.
Cullinan top scored with 25, while Lendon was unbeaten on 21.
Jorde Bux took 3/11 for Talbot.
The Yabbies were able to make the target with ease, effectively scoring at a run a ball throughout their innings.
No batting statistics were available for Talbot.
Cullinan was Carisbrook’s best bowler, finishing with figures of 2/33 off five overs.
Clunes took a comfortable seven-wicket win over Colts Phelans at Bull Millgate Oval.
Colts elected to bat first, and seemed to recover well from losing David Forde early in the innings to sit at 1/31.
A middle order collapse followed, where Colts lost 4/17 as Brad Stevenson, Muhammad Shehzad and Daniel Burnett were chief destroyers.
Daniel McGregor provided some late hitting to finish as equal top scorer with 16 alongside Dean Walker, but it wasn’t enough for Colts to finish all out on 92.
Shehzad finished with figures of 3/24 off 6.2 overs, while Stevenson finished with 3/34 off eight.
In response, Clunes were incredibly aggressive in chasing down the total within 14 overs, with Mark Jenkin and Josh Thompson playing fine innings, scoring 31 and 30 respectively and finishing unbeaten.
McGregor was Colts’ best bowler, finishing with 2/30.
A high-scoring encounter at Jubilee Oval saw Maryborough win by 101 runs over Beaufort.
The opening partnership of James Scott and Lachlan Bursill yielded 114 runs after they were sent in by Beaufort, and a steady stream of runs continued throughout the afternoon, with all of the Owls’ top six making more than 27 runs, spearheaded by Bursill’s 67, while Scott finished on 42. Sam Thomson’s 38, Daniel Petter and Bradey Tranter’s 36, and Tyson Williams’ 27 helped the Owls make 5/275 off their 40 overs.
Nathan Elford had Beaufort’s best figures, finishing with 2/26 off five overs.
In response, the Crows gave it their all, but weren’t able to chase down the total.
Andrew Grant’s 52 and Harrison Grant’s 38 were highlights for Beaufort as they fought hard, but they eventually finished on 9/174 off their 40 overs.
Joshua Cooper finished with 3/34 off seven overs, while Bursill took 2/5 and Williams finished with 2/46.
Natte Yallock started their 50th year celebrations by recording a five-wicket win over MKM.
MKM won the toss and elected to bat, but they were soon 2/2 after Craig Horner and Muhammad Haseeb Khan lost their wickets.
But with Lewis Patten and Jithin Aby Thomas making solid progress, they were able to recover to 2/55. However, that was as good as it got, with the Mill losing their final seven wickets for just 12 runs as they were all out for 91.
Patten top scored with 36, while Thomas (18) and Tristan Tack (14) were the only other Mill players to finish in double figures.
Callum Liddicoat had a strong outing with the ball, finishing with 4/13 off six overs, while Evan Elliott finished with 3/19 off seven overs.
In response, the Swans shook off a nervous start to eventually finish strongly.
Kushal Khamar looked to be doing some strong work early by taking the wickets of Trent Mortlock, Ben Williams and Zac Mortlock, but it was Liddicoat who soon settled the Swans down by backing up his great work with the ball by top-scoring with 28.
Elliott finished off the job, making an unbeaten 15 to guide the Swans to their win.
Khamar was the Mill’s best bowler, finishing with 3/35 off six overs.
Round two sees Colts Phelans and Carisbrook play off in a repeat of their grand final earlier in the year at Hedges Oval.
Natte Yallock will look to make it two from two as they host Beaufort, while impressive round one winners Clunes and Maryborough meet at Bull Millgate Oval.
Talbot will also look to make it two from two when they host MKM at Talbot Recreation Reserve.
