Five games greeted the Phil Hooper Insurance A reserve competition for the first time this season, with teams marking the round with some impressive performances.
Reigning champions Carisbrook were stung into action by their loss to Clunes last week, and vented their frustration on Beaufort to record a 203-run victory.
An impressive 109-run stand between Martin Mark, who made 75, and William Coutts, who scored 51 set up the innings for Brook, before Leigh Koop’s unbeaten 30 and Cole Harris’ 26 not out helped guide them to 3/218 off their 40 overs.
In response, Harris and Nick Broad simply devastated the Beaufort batting lineup, with Harris taking six wickets for just three runs, while Broad took 4/11. In the end, Beaufort were rolled for 15 runs.
In the thriller of the round, MKM held out just long enough in their batting innings to record a two wicket victory over Natte Yallock.
Natte made an excellent start thanks to the batting of Ryan Weir and Zac Mortlock, who were able to set an opening partnership of 38 runs, but they soon found themselves going from 1/55 to all out for 86.
In response, the bowling of Stephen Ross helped get Natte back into the game, as they had MKM sitting precariously at 5/36. However, the work of Bradley Reeves, who scored 25, and Tristan Tack, who scored 21, ensured that MKM would score 8/90 and take their first victory of the season.
Colts Phelans made it two from two with a comfortable victory over Maryborough.
Maryborough started losing consistent wickets midway through their innings, and in truth, were unable to find support for Jake Postle, who top scored with 32.
Riley Govan and Grant Rogers did the damage at the top of the order, with Govan taking 2/27, while Rogers was impressive with his 3/7. Ethan Chaplin cleaned up the tail, taking 3/6 off his seven overs, including five maidens.
The work of David Forde in response meant that Colts never really looked like losing, as his unbeaten 40 helped guide them to 3/76, passing the Owls’ total in just 20 overs.
Talbot proved to be very impressive winners in their first game of the season, taking a convincing 60-run victory over Laanecoorie Dunolly.
Consistent partnerships helped get the Yabbies to 7/180, with a 54-run opening stand between Jack Kenden (50) and Isaac Vlcek setting the ton, while Karl Gunther (37) was another to cash in with the bat.
In response, a steady stream of wickets always seemed to keep the Yabbies ahead, with Nick Earl (31) the only one to truly show some resistance in Laane’s innings.
Jesse Smith was impressive for Talbot, taking 4/24 off five overs, as Laane were all out for 120.
Avoca got their season back on track with a solid six wicket victory over Clunes.
It was the work of Josh Thompson with both bat and ball that ensured the Bulldogs would get the victory — first, he took 3/29 with the ball, before anchoring their innings with 45 runs. Rory Wilkinson, who took 5/28, was another impressive performer for Avoca, while Rajitha Perera top-scored for Clunes with 32.
Meantime, the second round of the Red House Bakery 16 and under competition was completed last Saturday.
Laanecoorie Dunolly and Carisbrook did battle, with Laane proving too strong in a 51-run victory.
Joe Lovel and Lachie Condie set up Laane’s innings, with both making 30 before retiring, while Cooper Polinelli added 19 runs.
Saige Purcell was Carisbrook’s best bowlers, taking 2/4 off his solitary over.
In response, Elliot Cullinan was the only Carisbrook player to make about 10 runs, scoring 17 as they were unable to chase down Laane’s 2/115, all out for 64.
Lovel took 2/4, while Thang Nguyen was even more impressive, taking 2/2 off his two overs.
Meantime, Colts Phelans’ quest to chase down Maryborough’s 95 was derailed due to player unavailability, but regardless, they gave it everything. The bowling power of Maryborough proved too much, however, with Colts dismissed for 24 runs.
Blair Ross celebrated the first hat-trick of the MDCA season, taking 3/1 off his 3.5 overs.
At the moment, there are four A reserve games scheduled for the weekend, subject to change due to the Energy Breakthrough.
Clunes and MKM are scheduled to meet at Bull Millgate Oval, while Carisbrook and Laanecoorie Dunolly are scheduled for Carisbrook Recreation Reserve. Maryborough and Avoca have had a change of ground from Jubilee Oval to Frank Graham Oval, while Natte Yallock and Talbot are scheduled to meet at Natte Yallock Oval.
