The Clunes-Mt Cameron Road is set to be rebuilt with the Central Goldfields Shire Council approving the more than $600,000 project last week.

Councillors moved unanimously at last week’s ordinary council meeting to award the contract for the road’s reconstruction, worth just over $612,000, to local business Davies Brothers Investments, trading as Shay Excavations.

The Clunes-Mt Cameron Road reconstruction forms part of council’s 2023-2024 capital works program, with $550,090 towards the works funded through the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery program.

According to the report tabled to council, the additional funding required has been sourced from savings incurred on the Burns Street, Maryborough reconstruction which is yet to begin.

The Burns Street reconstruction, also funded under the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery program, has a budget of $462,000 while the estimated cost is approximately $320,000, the report states.

Moving the motion to grant the contract, councillor Anna De Villiers said this way of re-allocating funds made sense.

“The funding we got for this road reconstruction is less than what’s required for the project and this difference is made up with a saving that was incurred from a different project council had in Burns Street, Maryborough,” she said.

“I think it’s a very good way of managing our finances and I’m very pleased we can get this road reconstructed.”

The motion was seconded by Cr Gerard Murphy, who congratulated the local business on its successful tender application.

“Davies Brothers Investments is Shay Excavations — they’re a local business and this is the first time we’ve seen them, as a council group, go through all the processes and be approved,” he said.

“I’m really happy we’ve been able to award this to a local business, so well done to them.”
