With four points in their last two games, including a last-gasp goal from Luke Bucknall earning the blue and whites a point against Victoria Park the week prior, Maryborough entered this game with some momentum.

That momentum hit a brick wall in the 11th minute when Paddy Healy opened the scoring for the Lions with his first goal of the season, putting the visitors in a 1-0 hole.

The blue and whites’ deficit doubled three minutes later when Tom Gillert found an opening in Maryborough’s defence and finished well to give the hosts a brilliant start.

Maryborough were able to stem the bleeding after Gillert’s goal, however, momentum was well and truly on Corangamite’s side.

Playing on their new grounds at the Camperdown Showgrounds, the Lions seemed unaffected by the drizzly conditions, pouncing with two goals late in the half.

First, it was Matthew Lyne who increased the hosts’ advantage to 3-0 in the 34th minute before Gillert was at it again in the 41st minute, scoring his second goal of the game.

Entering half time down 4-0, the main break gave the blue and whites a chance to regroup, hopeful of limiting the damage and nicking a goal of their own.

Those hopes were dashed with a quickfire double to start the second half, courtesy of Gillert completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute and Lyne making it 6-0 a minute later.

Credit to the blue and whites, they continued fighting until the final whistle, producing some strong passages of play in the latter stages.

Despite Maryborough’s best efforts, Corangamite snuffed out all their opponent’s chances of a consolation goal, completing the season double over the blue and whites following their 5-0 win in round five.

Maryborough has the chance to bounce back at Jubilee Oval on Sunday when they take on Vikings FC for the second time this season.

The Vikings commanded Maryborough in their last meeting back in round six, defeating the blue and whites 5-0 thanks to goals from Marcus Lynch, Evan James, Kade Peldys and a double from Darby Gaffney.
