2026 MCDFNL Netball Round 8 Preview — Lexton vs Avoca
One of the region’s most historic netball rivalries will resume this weekend when Lexton welcomes reigning premiers Avoca to the Tigers’ cage in a pivotal match for both teams.
Lexton’s sensational start to 2026 came to a screeching halt a fortnight ago at Deledio Reserve, suffering their first loss in a major shock to Dunolly.
Without the 2025 MCDFNL 17 and under best and fairest Charlize Kennedy, the Tigers didn’t develop an offensive rhythm until it was too late, restricted to 22 goals at three-quarter time before their late comeback.
After receiving another four points due to their round seven bye, Lexton remains in a fantastic position on the ladder, sitting just four points behind ladder-leaders Avoca and level with Navarre and Carisbrook in third and fourth.
Yet, with the Bulldogs, Grasshoppers and Redbacks on their upcoming menu, Lexton’s next three matches could have season-defining ramifications as they endeavour not to see their blistering start unravel.
That begins with a strong showing against Avoca, who found themselves in an arm wrestle last weekend at half time against the high-flying Eagles.
After a gripping two quarters, the Bulldogs flipped the match’s script in the second half, as shooters Maddy Egan and Gina Steel bolted away with 42 goals in the final 30 minutes.
With Avoca’s esteemed shooting tandem constantly capable of spearheading a game-changing run, Sarah Griffin, Shanae Hepworth and Eliza Bell will be crucial in Lexton’s defensive game plan on Saturday.
