2026 MCDFNL Football Round 6 Preview — Trentham v Maldon
The reigning premiers looks to keep pace with the early frontrunners when they welcome Maldon to Trentham Reserve.
The Saints started last weekend’s battle against the Maryborough Giants with one of the most impressive quarters of football from any team this season, booting 57 unanswered points to have the match virtually wrapped up by quarter time.
While Maryborough did engineer some resistance for the remainder of the contest, Trentham’s high-powered offence ended a 78-point win with 22 goals, nine of which kicked by 2025 leading goalkicker James Regan.
Despite heading into the match as heavy underdogs, the Bombers still have plenty to prove this Saturday, especially on the defensive end after conceding a combined 313 points over their last two matches versus Navarre and Carisbrook.
The Bombers ended the 2025 home and away season ranked 10th in points allowed, a persistent ailment that is threatening to jeopardise their quest to play finals football.
For Maldon, the challenge of containing Trentham’s destructive scoring capabilities starts in the midfield, needing to limit the likes of super Joels Joel Cowan and Joel Dovaston. Player-coach and former Berry Powell medallist Damian Wust will once again be key to that objective, as will Billy Johns and Tadgh Cananzi.
The persistence of Tristian Rowe, Ryan Burchell and Darcy Kelly was among the bright spots in Maldon’s 129-point defeat on Saturday, a standard the trio hopes to replicate and their teammates will aim to strive for against the defending champions.
