In about a week’s time, all Australian adults will be eligible for a 2023 COVID-19 booster following recommendations made by the country’s top vaccine advisory body.
According to a statement released last week, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended that from February 20, everyone aged 18 and over, including vulnerable members of the community, will be able to get another booster if it’s been six months since their last dose or infection.
“Our community did really well in getting the first few doses, and we need to keep up that protection. COVID-19 is still circulating and the virus has evolved over time,” Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) executive director, nursing and midwifery Robyn Wilson said.
“An extra dose will provide added protection against severe illness, especially in people who are aged 65 years and over, or at higher risk due to co-morbidities, disability or complex health needs.
“At this stage, ATAGI is advising that children and adolescents under the age of 18, don’t need the additional booster, unless they have risk factors for severe COVID-19.
“If you missed a previous dose this is a good reminder to catch up.”
The COVID-19 vaccine is available from participating pharmacies and GPs including Maryborough’s Nightingale Clinic, Priceline Pharmacy and the Clarendon Medical Centre depending on availability of slots and preferred vaccine brand — you can also find one near you using the online Vaccine Clinic Finder via the Australian Department of Health website on www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covid-19-vaccine-clinic-finder
