Maryborough Lions Club cancels tourist market in wake of COVID-19

The Maryborough Lions Club Tourist Market has been cancelled indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty of future outdoor events.

The Maryborough Lions Club announced last week that it has chosen not to renew its 12 month permit to run the market at its current CBD site.

The market has been running on the first Sunday of each month for two years at the Nolan Street location, after previously being held at the Maryborough Harness Racing Complex for around 15 years.

Maryborough Lions Club president Lorraine Parker said the wellbeing of the community was a priority in making the decision.

“It was a hard decision to make but one we felt needed to be made at the moment,” she said.

“We had to consider the ages of our members, most of us are in our 70s and even into our 80s and apart from our members, we had to consider our stallholders, the visitors who were coming to the market and the health and wellbeing of the community.”

Ms Parker said the club considered a number of factors in making the cancellation.
