MDCA crowns its best cricketers of the 2019-20 season in first online vote count

Carisbrook stalwart Martin Mark cleaned up at the MDCAʼs 2019/20 cricket awards, winning both A reserve and B gradeʼs batting awards, coming runner-up in the overall reserves count and tying for B gradeʼs season medal with Karl Gunther of Talbot. Votes were delivered online rather than at a medal night last week due to coronavirus.

The cream of the Maryborough District Cricket Association (MDCA) crop were congratulated last week with an online delivery of the 2019/20 cricket awards.

What is usually an in person night of merriment and celebration in the four walls of a cricket club was cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions, moving the vote count online to the MDCA’s Facebook page where players from around the district tuned in to see who took the chocolates.

Avoca’s Lachlan Morganti was the biggest winner of the night, taking out the honourable Ken Gibbs Medal as A grade’s best player for the season with 17 votes.

Last season’s recipient, Sam Bartlett, had another cracker of a year for the Owls, coming runner-up in the count with 13 votes ahead of Laane’s Matt Smith, Branden Wagstaff of Colts and MKM’s Aaron Westbrook all on nine votes each.

A Laanecoorie Dunolly duo took out the batting and bowling awards for A grade, with Smith making 535 runs this season at an average of 89.17 per innings and Zac Graham taking 20 wickets @ 7.80.

The strength of A grade was on display through selections for the MDCA’s Team of the Season, with all six clubs represented in the 12-man side.

Making up the team are Justin Bramble (wicket keeper), Smith (captain) and Graham from Laane, Bartlett and Mitch McClure from Maryborough, Wagstaff and Dayne Baker from Colts, Sam Williams and Ash Gunn from Clunes, Morganti (vice captain) from Avoca, Zac McLeod from Beaufort and Aaron Westbrook from MKM.
