Tennis association calls off finals series

The Maryborough District Tennis Association has cancelled preliminary and grand finals for all grades in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gully White has been named A gradeʼs minor premier, with Daniel Potter instrumental in the sideʼs winning season.

The Maryborough District Tennis Association committee has decided that its finals series will not progress due to the current climate, resulting in the cancellation of the preliminary finals and grand finals for all grades.

The association recognises the minor premiers of each grade as the teams of the season.

Gully White — Paul Lowery, Daniel Potter, Leigh Argall, Ron Potter, Kate McLoughlin, Rachel O’Halloran, Lauren Potter, Ally Ellis and Jean O’Halloran.

Lawn Gold — James Bathurst, Rosalie Douglas, Judy Lennen, Val Jackson and Tillie Wadeson.

Lawn Green — Cooper Willis, Blair Ross, Ben Deaker, Sam Ross and Ella Rothman.

Amphitheatre Black — Eric Wilkinson, Marlow Edgar, Emmett Ferguson and Garth Ferguson.

Prior to this decision, the association’s semi finals were played last Saturday, with Gully White powering to a 9-0 sweep at home against Bealiba in their A Grade clash.

Daniel Potter and Leigh Argall were steady against Jackson Fitzpatrick and Darren Mortlock on the way to an 8-5 victory, while teammates Kate McLoughlin and Rachel O’Halloran recorded an identical scoreline in their win over Bethany Fitzpatrick and Ashleigh Ross.

Although the Bealiba players continued to challenge throughout the afternoon — they won at least five games in eight of the nine sets — victories proved elusive.
