Highland Tartan capped off a near perfect season with an emphatic grand final victory on Tuesday, defeating its long-time rival, Dunolly Blue for the 2019/20 Goldfields Bowls Division’s midweek pennant shield.
Highland Tartan and Dunolly Blue have built a great rivalry in recent history, with Dunolly having claimed duel grand final victory across both the Saturday and Tuesday competitions for the last two seasons.
Dunolly claimed their third Saturday pennant title over Highland Tartan just a few weeks ago and were in the running for their sixth consecutive premiership in three seasons.
Highland quashed the hopes of a threepeat for Dunolly’s midweek side however, registering an 82-60 defeat of the back-to-back reigning premiers.
Highland Tartan team manager Sherry Simpson said the extensive grand final history between the two teams made for a very satisfying win.
“It was a really great win because we’ve lost the last two seasons against Dunolly and we were on top all this year, it was time to get one back,” she said.
“We beat Dunolly in semi finals, but they defeated Avoca in preliminary finals very strongly last week so they weren’t going down without a fight.
“Dunolly are a really dedicated group of players, they got our Saturday pennant side so it was really great for us to get the midweek win.”
