Strong performances in MDTA’s final home and away round

The final round of the Maryborough District Tennis Association’s regular season was held last Saturday, with Avoca and Gully White both finishing the home and away rounds with strong wins.

Avoca visited Lawn and had a battle on their hands early on, as Lawn’s Wendy Shay and Alisha Petersen notched an impressive 8-5 victory over Caitlin Howell and Holly Beavis in the opening women’s set.

The men’s matches were also close, beginning with Avoca’s Nathan and Trevor Field weather- ing a challenge from Riley Ford and Lyndon Tait before finally sealing the set 8-6.

Riley hit back in the following set when he teamed with Riley McLeish to topple Nathan and Heath Beavis 8-5, but that proved to be the extent of the Lawn team’s successes for the afternoon as the Avoca players took control.

Trevor backed up for an 8-4 win in the third men’s set and an 8-5 result in the mixed, teaming with Holly to get the better of Riley Ford and Wendy.

Gina Beavis also went undefeated for the day as she teamed with Nathan in the mixed to claim a solid 8-3 win over Lyndon and Alisha.

The two teams will face each other again in the first week of the finals, next Saturday at Avoca’s home courts.
