Butler, Stringer play in last AFL games

Two Maryborough locals played in what turned out to be the last round of AFL for the foreseeable future at the weekend.

Lauren Butler from Collingwood played in her sides crushing two- point AFLW semi-final loss to North Melbourne on Saturday while Jake Stringer impressed in Essendon’s first and possibly last game for the season.

In her 10th AFLW career game, Butler had 11 disposals, seven kicks, four handballs, three marks and laid three tackles among a high- pressure Roos forward line.

Collingwood trailed by one point at quarter time, but managed to take control by the major break to lead 4.1 (25) to 2.3 (15).

North turned up the heat in the third, very conscious of no second chances on offer due to a shortened finals series, booting 2.1 while keeping the Pies scoreless to lead by three points at the final break of the day.

While North only kicked one goal in the closing term, it was enough to keep Collingwood at bay with the Magpies slotting 1.1 (7) to fall two points shy as the final siren sounded.
