Both the men’s and women’s A grade singles titles returned to Avoca at the Maryborough District Tennis Association’s annual championships last Saturday, with Nathan Field and Holly Beavis earning the big wins.
Nathan started the day strongly in his pool games, riding his powerful serves to comfortable 8-3 wins against Riley McLeish and Daniel Potter.
Meanwhile, Lawn’s Riley Ford won through to the final on the other side of the draw, opening his day with an 8-6 defeat of Lyndon Tait, before outhitting multiple-time champion Trevor Field 8-4 to claim his place in the deciding match.
In a contest between two of the biggest servers in the competition, Riley provided Nathan with a solid challenge, but was in the end outclassed as Nathan pounded his way to an 8-5 win and second A grade singles title.
On the women’s side, Holly coasted to 8-2 wins over Freya Hart and Alisha Petersen before coming up against Julia Boatman of Ararat in the deciding set.
Although Julia launched a spirited challenge, Holly proved to be the steadier hand when it mattered, stepping up on the big points to claim her maiden MDTA singles title with an 8-3 result.
