Wilshaw and the Owls dampen Avoca’s spirit

Sam Bartlett and his Maryborough teammates celebrate the dismissal of Avocaʼs Luke Polson during day one of the round 13 clash.

Avoca saw just over half of its innings against Maryborough before being bowled out at the weekend.

The Bulldogs headed into Saturday optimistic, having just toppled the reigning two-day premier, Clunes the weekend before.

Maryborough got to work quickly to crush this confidence, taking all 10 wickets in 56.3 overs while conceding a beatable 156 runs.

Avoca captain Ben Morganti (1) was the first to fall, ran out by wicky Kaine Bodey with the total at just five runs, followed in short succession by George Norton who was bowled for a duck by Sam Bartlett.

Opener Nathan Lester (14) survived Bartlett temporarily, pairing with Lachlan Morganti for 36 runs before he was ultimately dismissed.

Morganti and Luke Polson soldiered on, putting up a 54-run unity before Morganti (43) became what would be the first wicket of many for Dylan Wilshaw.

Polson (37) saw just 20 runs beside Josh Morganti before he too was bowled by Wilshaw, leaving Josh Morganti to pair up with Matt Drummond.
