The Porteous Road bridge in Wareek has re-opened after a more than $1 million upgrade saw the bridge widened and weight limit increased.
Receiving $500,000 from Federal Government, $270,000 from state and with a contribution of $310,000 from the Central Goldfields Shire, the project began last year after the contract for the works was awarded to Murray Constructions Pty Ltd.
Works on the bridge involved the removal of the former single lane bridge which was constructed in 1960 and had a load limit of 20 tonnes, and the construction of a new two-lane bridge with a load limit of 160 tonnes.
Central Goldfields Shire administrator Hugh Delahunty said the importance of the shire’s road networks cannot be understated.
“Our roads and bridge network right across the shire is important as connecters for our community, whether it be for people going into town or going to school on the bus, but particularly trucks transporting material, grain or hay,” he said.
