The Maryborough men’s and women’s Blazers have finished 2019 in second place on their respective division ladders as the Country Basketball League (CBL) breaks for the holidays.

The final round of 2019, round 10, was completed on Saturday night with the Blazers hitting the road for a double header against the Echuca Pirates.

The Lady Blazers kicked off Maryborough’s campaign with an unbelievably close game, but ultimately fell short by five points.

Both sides worked quickly to get on the board with scores sitting level at four-all in the opening minutes.

Maryborough was left behind in the remaining eight minutes, with Echuca outscoring the side 17-11 in the first quarter.

Borough was kept quiet for the first few minutes of the second, but Claire Blower and young Charlotte Cain broke the silence with six points to put Maryborough just four points in arrears.

Scorers fluctuated around the four to six point mark, always in Echuca’s favour, but the Pirates were determined to seize a substantial half time lead.

A brief timeout with four minutes left in the first half of the game, gave the Pirates the tenacity to score 6-2 on the return, securing the their 32-21 lead at the main break.
