Stories of soldier settlers explored

Carisbrook Historical Society Inc. program coordinator Alex Stoneman is inviting community members to the societyʼs latest exhibition, which is running this weekend.

Community members have the opportunity to delve into the region’s past this weekend, with the Carisbrook Historical Society Inc. showcasing their latest exhibition.

WWI Soldier Settlers in the Carisbrook District: An Exhibition runs this weekend and showcases the history of returned servicemen from the First World War who settled in the region.

Carisbrook Historical Society Inc program coordinator Alex Stoneman said the exhibition began as some research into the soldier settlers of the region and quickly grew into something that was a “surprise to everybody”.

“After WWI the government decided they’d reward returning soldiers for their service and a practical way was to provide an opportunity for them to take up a block of land and set themselves up as farmers,” he said.

The exhibition runs from 10 am to 3.30 pm tomorrow, Saturday November 16 and Sunday, November 17 at the Carisbrook Senior Citizens Hall.
