The Red Cross is calling for locals to sign up as volunteers to help support communities experiencing emergencies and natural disasters.
The Red Cross has volunteer opportunities in a wide range of areas but is currently looking for emergency services volunteers from across the Central Goldfields, Pyrenees and Mount Alexander regions.
The role sees volunteers help out during disasters such as greeting people at evacuation centres, going door-to-door in communities following a flood or fire to check how people are coping, or registering people on the Red Cross registration service that helps people find their family and friends.
Red Cross emergency services volunteer and Maryborough local Mary Horton has been with the organisation since moving to town five years ago and said joining the emergency services section provides unique opportunities.
“I joined Red Cross as a way to get involved with and become a part of the community and I love it, I really enjoy volunteering,” she said.
