Firefighters respond to suspicious blaze

CFA crews quickly extinguished a small but suspicious fire on the Maryborough-St Arnaud Road this week.

Local firefighters rushed to extinguish a “suspicious” fire which sparked up on the roadside near Wareek earlier this week.

The Wareek/ Bung Bong Fire Brigade received the callout just before 5 pm on Monday on the Maryborough-St Arnaud Road and Goldfields Group Officer Robert Ipsen said the fire was suspicious.

“We had two tankers arrive on the scene and the fire was put out shortly after we arrived, it wasn’t very big,” he said.

“It’s definitely suspicious, it had five ignition points but thankfully it didn’t get up and go.

“I’d like to thank the people who phoned the fire in, it was very prompt and we were able to jump on it while it was still small.”

Mr Ipsen said crews found another fire site not long after they were called to the first.

“We found another spot that had been set on fire a bit further up the road not long after the first incident,” he said.
