Echuca Pirates ruin Blazers’ winning streak

Despite continuous efforts from Zac Mortlock and his Blazers teammates, the Echuca Pirates walked away victorious in round six of the CBLʼs 2019/20 season.

The Echuca Pirates set sail for Maryborough on Saturday and took a narrow victory over both Blazers squads in a double header during round six of the 2019/20 Country Basketball League season.

Echuca was too dominant for both the men’s and women’s Blazers on Saturday night, shattering the men’s flawless 5-0 win record.

Maryborough led for a majority of the men’s game, by as much as nine points in the first quarter, but Echuca reined the deficit in to just two points by the first break.

The Blazers extended their lead out to six in the first minutes of the second, but fierce attack from Echuca off-set the home side and equalled scores at 29-all with just five minutes remaining.

From there, Echuca snagged its first lead of the game, Jacob Rollason pinned it back to 31-all with a field goal, prompting a Blazers time out.

An immediate Maryborough foul on return to the court gave the Pirates two free shots, which they landed, allowing them the lead.

Zac Mortlock’s goal evened the score once again, but Echuca was able to extend its lead to seven points with two minutes to go.

Maryborough struck back with Brady Neill (6) and Mortlock (4), leveling the score 43-all by halftime.

The Blazers led for a majority of the third quarter, but weren’t able to break away with Echuca never sitting more than five points away.

The Pirates made their move two and half minutes out, outscoring the Blazers 8-3 to take a 58-55 advantage into the final stretch.
