The Central Goldfields Shire Council’s fire prevention activities have commenced ahead of the annual Fire Danger Period.
At the October ordinary council meeting, administrators noted council’s fire prevention activities were commencing prior to the fire season and fire restriction dates being announced for the shire.
According to the report tabled to council, in the lead up to the Fire Danger Period approximately 800 Fire Prevention Notices reminding land owners to clean up their property and their legal responsibility to eliminate bush fire hazards on their property have been issued within the shire.
The report further outlines that once fire restriction dates commence, municipal fire prevention officers have the power to enter properties to undertake inspections and to issue directional fire prevention notices, requiring hazards to be removed within a certain time frame.
If works are not completed within the set time, the report states council has the legal right to carry out the works and recoup costs.
With 278 Fire Prevention Notices issued against property owners during the 2018 fire danger period, Central Goldfields Shire administrator Hugh Delahunty said it’s important property owners “take their responsibilities seriously” ahead of the fire season.
