Pyrenees Shire residents are being encouraged to remove glass from their recycling with new recycling requirements coming into effect on Saturday, November 2.
The changes come as the Pyrenees Council’s new recycling contractor, Australian Paper Recovery, only accepts paper, cardboard, steel cans, aluminium cans, plastic milk bottles, plastic soft drink bottles and plastic detergent bottles.
A statement from council said glass will be recycled separately, and Pyrenees Shire mayor Robert Vance said separating glass from other recyclables would lower contamination.
“Glass often breaks and contaminates the other recyclables in the bin. Contamination means small pieces of glass get stuck in paper, cardboard and plastic and they are no longer recyclable,” he said.
