MKM topples Avoca to claim first win

Avocaʼs Matt Drummond hears the death rattle after playing defensively against MKM at the weekend.

MKM has registered its first win of the season, overcoming Avoca by two wickets at the weekend.

The battle was on for a season first win for both sides on Saturday with the Bulldogs batting first in less than ideal weather conditions at the Mill.

Avoca’s line up was changed heavily with several newcomers taking to the ground to fill absences.

Nathan Lester and Lachlan Morganti opened the Dogs’ innings with a 30-run partnership before Morganti (14) was dismissed.

Skipper for the day George Norton was up next and while he himself only added one run to the team total, Lester was afforded the space to make 15 runs before Norton was claimed.

Matt Drummond (5) hung around for 15 runs before he was bowled by opposition captain Aaron Westbrook.

Brandon Weatherson stepped up alongside Lester for 27 runs, before Lester (40), Avoca’s most plentiful runscorer became the first of Kieran Johns’ victims for the day.

Weatherson and Jason Hunt were Avoca’s next pairing, before Johns (8) claimed Hunt leaving Avoca at 5/116.

The tail end of the Dogs’ order fell quickly with Johns claiming the next four wickets, Josh Thompson (1), Nathan Coghlan (14), Anthony Brown and Nathan Field (0), while sacrificing just 20 runs.
