Mixed results highlight Saturday pennant’s return

Wayne Leersen bowls for Avoca Red on Saturday in a tough loss to reigning division one premiership side Dunolly Blue.

Goldfields Bowls Division’s (GBD) 2019/20 Saturday Pennant season got underway at the weekend, with varying results across the district.

Reigning premiers Dunolly Blue comfortably defeated Avoca Red 92- 37, claiming all three rinks by more than 17 shots.

Alan Weir took an emphatic 30-13 win over Ian Proctor, the biggest of the day, and was backed up by Barry Cann’s 28-12 rink win and Greg Dobbin’s 34-12 victory to take the overall 55-shot win.

While Dunolly Blue headed straight into first place on the ladder, it sits alongside two other sides, Talbot Gold and Highland Tartan after they too won in straight sets at the weekend.

Hosting Dunolly Gold, Talbot took a big win with 52 shots the end difference, awarding the side 12 premiership points ahead of round two.

Dunolly came close on one rink, going down by just four shots and suffered a 25-14 loss on the second, but it was the final rink that really put the nail in the coffin.

Peter McLoughlin took a resounding 44-7 win on his rink, contributing largely to Talbot’s overall victory.

In the closest game of the division, Highland Tartan defeated Golf Blue 84-45.
