Locals to get moving for parkrun launch

Belinda McKnight (front) will be bringing parkrun to the Goldfields Reservoir this weekend, along with some help from local volunteers, and is encouraging residents to come along for a morning walk or run.

Maryborough will be joining the international parkrun craze for the first time this weekend as a five kilometre walk or run event gets underway at the Goldfields Reservoir.

Local residents looking to get outdoors and active and socialise with other community members are encouraged to head down to the reservoir for the first Goldfields Reservoir parkrun on Saturday, which will mark the start of a weekly run.

Parkrun is a free weekly five kilometre walk or run event which started in the UK 15 years ago and has since gone on to have 6.5 million people registered around the globe.

The Goldfields group is one of around 370 held Australia wide and event director Belinda McKnight decided to bring it locally as part of her participation in the 2019 Leading Excellence Maryborough program — a six month course involving 14 workshops and leadership sessions.

“It’s a five kilometre, run, walk or jog, however you want to do it. It’s all inclusive, anyone who wants to come along can.”

The first parkrun will be held this Saturday from 8 am at the Goldfields Reservoir. The event is free but participants must register online before running.
