The 2019/20 Country Basketball League season kicks off this weekend and three games will be played locally with both the men’s and women’s Blazers’ sides hosting in round one.
The men’s Blazers side is set to play division newcomers Bacchus Marsh on Saturday night before both the men’s and women’s teams take on Kyneton on Sunday here in Maryborough.
Both teams are under the guidance of new coaching staff this season with Grace Bibby fronting the women’s side and Mick Hickey taking on the men.
Hickey is the father of key Blazers player Dale Hickey and has a wealth of coaching experience having coached at SEABL level for several years, leading Wodonga at CBL level and amassing over 25 years of representative coaching roles including five Victoria Country division one and two championship titles.
Hickey said he has been destined to coach the Blazers since he relocated to Bendigo a few years ago and is “looking forward to the challenge”.
“My son Dale has played with the Blazers for four years and former coach Brady Neill has been at me for about 18 months, I think I was targeted for the role, but if I can get them over the line that’s worth it,” he said.
The Maryborough Men’s Blazers kick off the club’s season this Saturday night from 6 pm at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre (MSLC) against Bacchus Marsh.
Sunday, also at MSLC, will see the Maryborough Lady Blazers face Kyneton with tip off at 12 pm followed by the men from 2 pm.
