The Maryborough Blazers enjoyed a perfect start to the 2019/20 Country Basketball League (CBL) season with three from three wins in round one.
The men’s Blazers defeated conference newcomers Bacchus Marsh 66-58 on Saturday night, setting the tone for a red hot weekend.
While the Lions hit the board first, it took less than a minute for a Blazers reply with Brady Neill the first to score for the season.
It was all about Harry Butler for the following shots with back-to- back twos and a successful free throw.
Lachlan Drummond broke the Blazers away 9-6 with a goal at five minutes, but Marsh was quick to reply.
Drummond bared the brunt of the scoring for the next few minutes, adding four points with both sides going blow-for-blow.
Neill landed his second basket just 30 seconds out from the buzzer, putting Borough out 15-11, but the Lions reeled it back within seconds to sit two points behind at the end of the first.
After an explosive opening quarter, both teams combined put up just 20 points in the entire second term.
Drummond and Dale Hickey kicked off the second, putting Maryborough in front 19-13 and the one Bacchus Marsh basket which followed and was quickly answered by Neill and Darcy Bond, prompting a Lions timeout as the Blazers led by nine points.
