An undefeated Avoca take on reigning premiers in do-or-die preliminary final

Peggy De Spirt passes into the ring for Trentham during its qualifying final with Carisbrook last month. Avoca is now the only team left between the Saints and the
2019 grand final.

This year ’s grand final favourites, Avoca will meet with reigning premiers Trentham this Saturday in a do-or-die fight to get into the big dance.

Minor premiers, Avoca escaped the home and away season undefeated, winning 15 consecutive games and breezing through qualifying finals with a 24-goal win over Harcourt.

This success has been a long time coming for the Bulldogs who after losing the 2014 grand final, have been knocked out of the finals series every year since, sometimes by a matter of a few goals.

The introduction of two key players has given the Dogs the boost they needed to take that extra step to defeat every other team in the competition throughout the season and head into finals with the confidence to topple any opponent.

Trentham had enjoyed a similar run in seasons 2017 and 2018, going completely undefeated and also claiming back-to-back flags, before this year struggling with major list changes and finishing in third place on the ladder after an 11-win three-loss season.

The Saints are not to be underestimated however, as a massive competitor gunning for their third grand final appearance in as many years.
