Lions land preliminary finals placing after defeating Dunolly

Lionsʼ wing defence Lauren Peeler throws the ball high to clear her opponent.

Harcourt narrowly escaped the grips of a desperate Dunolly side on Saturday in a battle for a spot in the last round of finals.

The Lions headed in as clear favourites, having defeated the Eagles by 38 goals throughout the season, but that result seemed a world away on Saturday in an impressive semi final bout.

The Eagles headed in off the back of a surprise defeat of Natte Bealiba and kept up with the Lions in impressive fashion.

With scores level at 11 all, Dunolly goalie Lara Metelmann received the ball just in time to score on the siren to put the Eagles up by one at the quarter break.

Harcourt came out determined to break the Eagles in the second term, with wing attack Stacey Mitchell and goal attack Jess Lord running their attacking third with tenacity and defenders Kirrily McKay and Maddie Farrell shutting down Dunolly’s ring passes with efficiency.

This pressure and accurate shooting saw Harcourt bridge the gap to take a 23-22 lead into the main break of the day.

This was still too close for comfort and saw a dramatic change in positions for the Lions with Lord heading into goal defence, Lauren Peeler heading to the goal ring and Farrell tasked with shutting down Dunolly’s midcourt attack.
