The National Basketball League’s (NBL) newest team, the South East Melbourne Phoenix, will travel to Maryborough next week for its first ever preseason training camp.
Maryborough is set to be etched into the Phoenix’s history with the team’s first ever training and bonding expedition to be held at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre (MSLC) from next Monday.
Phoenix is set to join the NBL in season 2019-20 as the ninth premier team, making the visit to the shire next week all the more exciting ahead of the season start in October.
The upcoming three-day camp will see around 20 professional basketballers and staff utilise the local region and driving force behind the visit, Ron Bongetti said the tree-change will be great for the team as it saddles up for its first season.
“It’s exciting that Maryborough is their first stop in their inaugural year. They’re building their whole year starting right here,” he said.
“A couple of years ago we had a team from Whittlesea do a training camp at the MSLC and they said how great it was to get two courts to themselves and a gym and pool as well.
“I was explaining that to Simon Mitchell, the coach of the Phoenix, and he said ‘that sounds like a great opportunity’.
“In Melbourne there’s a lot more demand on the use of indoor sporting facilities, you just can’t get the space. Whereas here in Maryborough, they can have full access to the facility.
“The town has everything you need and it’s a good chance for the team to get away together as well.”
